The sad death has taken place of Mairead Meehan from the famed Meehan Gaelic clan in Caltra, Galway. Mairead was only 25 years of age and was the sister of Galway stars Declan, Thomas, Noel and Michael Meehan. She had bravely battled against cancer for quite a spell. The only daughter in a family of six boys, Mairead was also the girlfriend of Galway football hero Kieran Fitzgerald. She was a sporting star in her own right. Mairead was a very useful camogie player. A teacher who graduated from DCU, she gained an All-Ireland junior camogie medal with the Holy Rosary College. A minutes silence will be held next Sunday prior to the Galway - Derry NFL game at Pearse Stadium as a mark of respect.
