Brian Corcoran, who announced his recent retirement from hurling with the publication of his book 'Every Single Ball', received the December Cork Person of the Month Award to mark his glittering sporting career. Brian's name now goes forward, with the eleven other monthly winners from this year, for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year. The Gala Awards Lunch takes place on Jan 26th next at the Sheraton Fota Island Golf Resort & Spa, just down the road from Brian's home and local Erin's Own Club. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern T.D. and Brian Crowley M.E.P. will be Guests of Honour at the Person of Year Lunch and sponsors are Irish Examiner, RTE, Southern Adv. and the Sheraton Fota Island. Brian Corcoran is one of the most respected hurlers and dual players of his generation. He was named Hurler of the Year in 1992 and again in 1999, when he won his first All Ireland senior medal. In the autumn of 2001, he quit both club and inter-count hurling but came out of retirement two and a half years later to win two All Irelands, in 2004 and 2005. Many sports writers say Brian Corcoran was the greatest Cork Hurler since Christy Ring. "Many of our great hurlers were specialists in one position, but Corcoran was a star in three different positions – corner back, centre back and full-forward" wrote GAA Reporter John Horgan. Sean Og O'hAilpin said "If I were to name one hurler who in my opinion was the most outstanding hurler I have seen and played with, it would have to be Brian Corcoran". The great Jimmy Barry Murphy added "I have been watching hurling for the past 35 years or so, and I can say without hesitation, I have never seen better than Brian Corcoran". "Brian has won the respect and admiration of all sports followers in Ireland, as a sports star and a gentleman" said Awards Organiser Manus O'Callaghan at the recent award presentation, which took place at a Gala Sports Dinner organised by Paul Mitchell to raise funds for the new Cork based charity Sea Change. Sea Change is a charity, backed by Cork Sports Stars, to help the world's poorest people by issuing loans, mainly to women, to start their own business and escape poverty. Tweet
