Herbert and O'Connor in frame at Wexford

September 27, 2006
Former Limerick star Pat Herbert and Kilkenny's 1993 All-Ireland winning captain Eddie O'Connor are set to battle it out for the vacant hurling manager's post in Wexford. Dublin-based Herbert, who has an army background, had a brief spell in charge of Oulart-the-Ballagh, but has no managerial experience at inter-county level. He is a strong disciplinarian, however, and fits the bill for a Wexford side who are trying to recover from two disastrous championship and league campaigns. Glenmore man O'Connor is another prominent name on the list. He has expressed an interest in the post, but like Herbert, has yet to receive an interview. But the special sub-committee, which includes Model County legend Tony Doran, is anxious to talk to him when some members return from holiday. Former Wexford stars Liam Dunne and Tom Dempsey, along with Nicky English, Michael Duignan and Len Gaynor, have also been linked with the vacancy which arose following Seamus Murphy's resignation, but aren't believed to be interested.
