Limerick-Clare game goes ahead despite Munster celebrations

May 21, 2006
Despite over 60,000 Munster fans expected on the streets of Limerick to welcome home their Heineken Cup rugby heroes, the Munster SFC clash between Limerick and Clare at the Gaelic Grounds will still go ahead. There is expected to be chaos in the city as huge crowds welcome home their rugby heroes. The football clash between the home county and Clare will still go on despite the other huge event taking place at the same time and the crowd for the Gaelic Ground clash is expected to be no more than 1,500 as a result. Limerick Chairman Denis Holmes admitted that thought had been given to calling off the match but there was little flexibility in the championship schedule to allow for it. "The game cannot be deferred or postponed at this stage. Our fear is that, with the celebrations in the city, we can expect no more than 1,500 at the Gaelic Grounds," said the Limerick official. Clare have altered their match day plans as a result of the celebrations in order to avoid being stuck in traffic. "Our teams will have to take to the road much earlier now to avoid the traffic congestion leading from Shannon to Limerick," said Clare PRO Sean Crowe.
