Kildare club player banned for life

January 21, 2006
The Kildare County Board have decided to ban a Confey footballer for life from the GAA after he was reported for attacking two match officials. The incident occurred during an intermediate 'B' championship semi-final against Eadestown in Hawkfield. Confey's Freddie Griffin was shown two yellow cards by referee Fintan Barrett and as the official brandished a red card the player attempted to grab Barrett in the genital area. The referee fell to the ground and linesman Des Bergin immediately went to his assistance. As soon as Bergin arrived at the scene, he too was the victim of an assault in the genital area. The maximum ban in the GAA rulebook is two years but the association are able to expel members in 'exceptional circumstances' and this is the route that the Lilywhite board decided to take.
