Laois hurling final incident under scrutiny
November 01, 2005
The circumstances which led to a young hurler being rendered unconscious in last weekend's Laois senior hurling final is to expected to be investigated by the Laois County Board.
The county decider between Castletown and Camross was marred when teenage hurler Dean Delaney was knocked unconscious in an off-the-ball incident in the match at O'Moore Park, Portlaoise.
Play was stopped for 15 minutes while the 15 year old Camross player was taken off the field on a stretcher and dispatched to hospital.
"I'm preparing my report and I need to speak to umpires that were there," said referee Pat Moran.
"There seems to be a few different stories surrounding what happened and there are a few things that I need to confirm.
"It's a shame really, because up to that point it was a very good match, but there are things I need to check out yet.
"I can't say more than that at this stage."
Castletown won the title by 1-8 to 0-10 with David Cuddy, Camross's tormentor in chief.
The winners, ironically, could only manage a goal and a point in the first half as they went in at the break trailing by 1-1 to 0-7; Castletown's goal being scored by James Hooban.
Cuddy struck five points in the second half to help his side to victory.
However team-captain Robbie Delaney's acceptance speech was drowned out by the boos of the unhappy Camross supporters following the injury suffered by his namesake.
