Croker security fencing ruled out

May 17, 2005
The GAA has no plans to erect security fencing around the pitch in Croke Park, despite invasions by the Monaghan supporters after the recent NFL Division 2 final and a streaker during last Sunday's Leinster SFC clash between Dublin and Longford. However, there are growing fears over the pitch invasions and, where possible, security will be stepped up to prevent them. Croke Park Stadium Director Peter McKenna said that the safety implications of pitch invasions are serious, especially where large numbers congregate in a small area in front of the Hogan Stand for presentations. "People don't seem to realise just how dangerous these crushes can be," McKenna said. "If somebody falls to the ground, the potential for disaster is enormous. We're doing our utmost to impress upon people that they are putting themselves and others at risk by coming onto the pitch in large numbers and we hope that they will take it on board, especially later in the season when presentations are made."
