There is widespread shock among Westmeath GAA gaels following the tragic death of a well-known referee.

Thirty-two-year-old Ballymore and Fr. Dalton's clubman David Hannon died tragically on Monday, leaving behind a wife and three young children.

A native of Bray, Co. Wicklow, David refereed both hurling and football games in the Lake County. He was also emerging through the ranks of the inter-county scene, officiating at this year's Leinster under-17 hurling championship clash between Dublin and Offaly amongst other inter-county games.

The Mullingar-based Garda was due to referee the Westmeath SHC clash between Brownstown and St Brigid's at TEG Cusack Park yesterday evening. A minute's silence was held in his memory before the throw-in and at other games around the county.
