GPA propose preliminary hurling quarter-finals

The GPA has suggested changes to the proposed hurling championship structures for 2018.
Last month, the CCCC unveiled plans for a new All-Ireland SHC which would consist of two provincial championships and a provincial qualifier group - the Leinster and Munster championships would be played off on a round-robin basis, so there would be five rounds of four matches each.
The GPA is proposing that two teams, rather than one, emerge from the provincial qualifier group to play the third-placed Munster and Leinster teams in the All-Ireland series. The players' body is also proposing that six teams - Westmeath, Meath Antrim, Laois, Carlow and Kerry - compete in the provincial qualifier group, and that the Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cup competitions to be run over nine weeks instead of five, with the finals played as double-headers with top tier games.
"The GPA are satisfied that there will be no negative impact on club games, while the suggestions will also promote the development of hurling in lower-tiered hurling counties," a GPA statement read.
The proposals will be voted on a Special Congress on Saturday, September 30.
