Six teams, including four county sides, will take part in the Conor McGurk Cup in Queen's University early in the New Year.

Third-level sides Queen's University and Ulster University will be joined by the hurlers of Armagh, Derry, Donegal and Down in the competition which honours the memory of Queen's hurling club past member Conor McGurk, who died at a young age in 2014.

Queen's GAA development officer and 2002 Armagh All-Ireland SFC winner Aidan O'Rourke said at this week's launch: "The Conor McGurk tournament has filled a very important void in the calendar for county and college teams.

"These competitive games come at the right time in preparation for the college Championships and National Leagues and we have been greatly encouraged by the commitment to and feedback from all competing sides.

"The tournament has great potential to grow in depth and stature - something that the McGurk family, Queen's University Sport and sponsors The Downey Group are keen to see happen."

The competition gets underway on January 3 with Down facing Armagh and Down meeting Donegal (both at 8pm).
