Can Slaughtneil emulate St Finbarr's '81 run?

Dual stars from different era's Slaughneil's Shane McGuigan and Jimmy Barry Murphy St Finbarrs

Robert Emmets GAC Slaughtneil created history on Sunday by becoming the first club to capture a historic treble of the football, hurling and camogie provincial titles - all within the same year but can they better the record of Cork's St Finbarr's?

The Derry champions' 0-12 to 0-9 triumph over Kilcoo in the Ulster club SFC final ensured they'd conjured a feat which had never been accomplished before and now they'll be looking to write a new chapter to the story.

The only club to compete in both football and hurling All-Ireland senior club finals in the same year are St Finbarr's of Cork in 1981, in what was a remarkable season for 'The Barr's'.

Between 1980 and 1982, they became the only club in the Rebel County to win three consecutive senior hurling titles (a feat which hasn't been repeated since), after having won their second All-Ireland title in 1978.

Kilkenny giants Ballyhale Shamrocks would deny them a third Tom Moore Cup in '81, but the club's footballers would have better fortunes that year when they met Walterstown of Meath and retained their title on a 1-8 to 0-6 score-line. They'd return to the final again in '87 to defeat Roscommon kingpins Clan na nGael before Nemo Rangers' began to exert their rule around Leeside.

Like Slaughtneil's at present, the southside Cork city club's was a phenomenal achievement at the time.

The newly crowned Ulster champions will be now be turning their attentions towards an All-Ireland quarter-final on Saturday week against St Kiernan's in Greenford, London, where they will be colossal favourites.

Many of the same team will be donning their helmets on February 4 to take on either O'Loughlin Gaels (Kilkenny) or Cuala (Dublin) in an All-Ireland club SHC semi-final, with a potential football semi-final to follow against Rhode (Offaly) or St Vincent's (Dublin) seven days later.

More history could well be in store.
