Derry GAA is in mourning following the death of Owen Gribbin on Tuesday at 90 years of age.

One of six brothers, Gribbin represented the Oak Leafers with distinction at full-forward and was a star performer in their 1958 All-Ireland SFC final defeat to Dublin at Croke Park.

He came from a footballing family with rich tradition and lined out with Newbridge alongside his brothers Willie, Roddy, Mickey, Hugh Francis and Henry.

A Derry GAA spokesperson commented: "Sometimes forgotten amongst talk of great Derry footballers, Owen Gribbin was a household name throughout Ireland in the 50s.

"One of the finest to wear the red and white jersey. A gentleman all his days, Owen Gribbin will remain an icon of Derry GAA. He will be greatly missed."
