"Scary times" for former Down minor

Accrington Stanley's Shay McCartan

Former Down minor footballer Shay McCartan is undergoing tests after collapsing during an FA Cup match.

The Accrington Stanley forward was introduced as an 85th-minute substitue during the League Two side's Cup victory over Bradford City at Valley Parade on Saturday but collapsed in the fifth minute of injury time.

After receiving treatment from paramedics, the 22-year-old was stretchered off and taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Second cousin of former Down footballer and manager James McCartan, Shay won MacRory Cup and Hogan Cup honours with St Colman's College, Newry in 2010 and 2011.

The Glenn clubman also netted a first-half hat-trick against neighbours Armagh in the 2011 Ulster MFC, but was in the process of embarking on a professional soccer career with current Premier League club Burnley at the time.

The former Northern Ireland U21 soccer star travelled home with his team-mates after being released from hospital on Saturday and tweeted the following message: "Thanks for all the messages, scary times but hopefully be ok. Great win for the boys."
