Derry football has been left reeling by the news that no fewer than nine players have quit Damian Barton's panel.

The Irish News has named the nine as Danny Heavron, Ciaran McFaul, Conor McAtamney, Eoghan Brown, Emmett Bradley, Christopher Brown, Gareth McKinless, Sean Leo McGoldrick and Liam McGoldrick. The newspaper is also reporting that the McGoldricks' cousin and fellow Eoghan Rua, Coleraine player Niall Holly is considering his future with the Oak Leafers.

The defections come just a week after Barton was reappointed manager for a second year.

After making a poor start to this year's championship when they suffered a heavy first round defeat to Tyrone in the Ulster SFC, the Oak Leafers regrouped well under the 1993 All-Ireland winner to reach the last 12 of the All-Ireland SFC. They defeated Louth, Meath and Cavan along the way before finally losing to Tipperary by a last-minute point.
