Galway manager Tony Ward says full-forward Conor Whelan is "still a doubt" for Saturday's All-Ireland U21 hurling championship final against Waterford.

Whelan has not picked up a hurley since damaging his AC joint in last month's semi-final win over Dublin and would be a huge loss against the Deise men considering he is the only member of Ward's panel with senior inter-county experience.

The Tribe boss is also sweating over the fitness of left corner-back Declan Cronin.

"Conor hasn't hurled since the Dublin game, he has just done a bit of running at training. The injury isn't as bad as was first thought, but he is still a doubt," Ward said in today's Irish Examiner.

"When you consider all the senior hurlers Waterford have, we need Conor. Declan Cronin is 80 per cent right. We are hoping that without doing much this week he will be fine.

"We had a few injuries coming out of Thurles after the semi-final and we could have really done without the round of club championship games the week before last as we lost a week of training."
