Eamon McGee has become the second Donegal stalwart to announce his inter-county retirement in the wake of Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final loss to Dublin.

The teak-tough Gaoth Dobhair defender bizarrely used a quote from Lord of the Rings on Twitter to signal that his time in the green and gold is up. Eamon and his brother Neil have been lynchpins of the Donegal defence for well over a decade. During a stellar 13-year career, Eamon won one All-Ireland SFC medal, three Ulster SFC titles and an Allianz League medal in 2007.

With 154 appearances - 57 in the championship - he is Donegal's fourth most 'capped' footballer after Colm McFadden - who retired immediately after Saturday's loss - Christy Toye and Brian Roper.

Rory Kavanagh has also indicated that he won't be returning in 2017.
