Mickey Harte is confident that Sean Cavanagh will return in 2017.
The Tyrone captain hinted last spring that this would be his last season as an inter-county footballer. If the 33-year-old does decide to retire, his 59th minute dismissal against Mayo in last Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final would be a desperately disappointing way to bow out.
"We wouldn't be expecting it (Cavanagh to retire)," Harte said.
"Sean is in a bad state at the minute and at this stage of his career, the effort he has given, it would not be a good time to ask him. I hope he takes time out to reflect on what's there for him.
"Who knows what that will tell him when he takes some time to think about it?"
