The Kilburn Gaels GAA club raised £21,076 from a charity cycle in honour of a former team mate.

The Cormac Trust and MS Ireland were the beneficiaries from the money raised to honour the late Cathal Forde.

Cathal was a former Kilburn Gaels hurler who died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) during a training session in 2010.

A group from the club undertook the challenge to cycle from Highgate in London where Cathal collapsed to his home town of Gort, Co Galway.

Kilburn Gaels PRO Robbie Stakelum told the Irish Post that they were overwhelmed by the support that they received, especially in Gort.

"We got a marvellous reception in Gort, we couldn't get over it, there were crowds out in the street and everything," said Stakelum.

"We were lucky with the weather and we picked up a few riders from cycling clubs along the way, so there was a right crowd of us by the time we got to Gort."
