Huge cash injection for coaching and games in four Leinster counties

August 03, 2016

A big boost for games development in Louth, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

Leinster Council are to plough €1.5m into coaching and games development in four counties in close proximity to Dublin.

The Irish Independent reports that the GAA at central level have pledged €500,000 per year for an initial three years to fund coaching and games development projects in Louth, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow.

The hope is that the significant investment will raise standards and help close the gap between Dublin and the rest.

"We're not going around with our heads in the sand," Leinster Council chairman John Horan remarked.

"We need a marketable product to keep sponsors going and we need a marketable product to get supporters to come.

"You can't have those big gaps that exist between Dublin and the rest. This is an attempt to address that."

Applications are currently being invited from qualified candidates for the role of Games Promotion Officers in each county.

It is envisaged that the number of GPO's in Louth, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow will double, if not treble, in the not too distant future.

In Meath, meanwhile, former county footballer and selector/coach Sean Kelly is due to take up a part-time role as a Director of Coaching in the coming weeks while All Star Johnny Doyle has been appointed as Community Development and Participation Officer in Kildare.
