Ger Loughnane cannot understand why Tony Kelly spent most of yesterday's Munster SHC semi-final in his own half of the field.

The former Hurler of the Year was named to start at centre forward, but was effectively deployed at centre back.

"Many Clare fans - and neutrals - were puzzled by the deployment of Tony Kelly," Loughnane writes in his Irish Daily Star column.

"When you see Kelly being used as a de facto centre half back, you have to ask: what the hell is that about?

"But Kelly has to learn as well. He has to have a greater work-rate and a tougher physical edge to his game."

The two-time All-Ireland winning manager also questioned the Banner's attitude.

"This was a complete meltdown, as bad as anything over the previous couple of years. Everybody thought that last summer's defeat to Cork was the absolute nadir. This was just as bad.

Their body language was awful - on the field and on the sideline. Clare had no energy, no spirit, no leadership..."
