Eoin Doyle is delighted that Cian O'Neill has returned to manage his native Kildare.

The former Kerry football and Tipperary hurling coach has already led the Lilywhites to promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz League this season and is hoping tomorrow's Leinster SFC opener against Wexford in Croke Park will be the start of a long championship campaign.

Teams skipper Doyle, who returns for his first start of the season after a long injury layoff, told the Irish Daily Star: "I've known Cian a couple of years now. He was my lecturer at UL.

"I worked under him for my thesis, EYP (final year project). I know what he's about, he's a shrewd operator.

"Cian is a Kildare man, a Newbridge man and we lent him out to other counties and he brought success to them. He's been able to impart his knowledge of other set-ups and we're delighted to have him back in Kildare, trying to bring us to the next level and where we want to get to.

"He's very honest. He's very good at getting his point across. He wants the best for us and for that to happen, he wants to get the best out of us."
