Cork manager Kieran Kingston accepts they have a lot of ground to make up before they can be considered genuine Liam MacCarthy Cup contenders.

The Rebels are scheduled to take on Tipperary in the Munster SHC at Semple Stadium on Sunday and the Tracton clubman is pragmatic when it comes to discussing their chances of getting hands on silverware this summer.

"All we're trying to do is be the best we possible can be come championship," he told The Evening Echo.

"We all know we're a bit away from dining at the top table of hurling. That's not me talking down Cork hurling, it's been well documented the last couple of weeks where we're ranked in terms of the Munster championship and the All-Ireland, and even the Tipp game.

"We're total outsiders for everything, even the Tipp game, but that's totally understandable in terms of results. Cork haven't won an All-Ireland in 11 years. We don't have guys that are on or off the panels with All-Ireland medals in any grade, and that's not trying to defend it.

"Cork weren't mentioned (on RTE's League Sunday as All-Ireland contenders), but that's understandable given the exits we've had in championship over the last few years. But look our focus is on the next game.

"We aim to be the best we can be on any given day, that's it. That's what we're there for."
