Tipperary captain Brendan Maher has distanced himself from a controversial tweet which came from his club Borris-Ileigh's account over the weekend.

Maher and county team mate Paddy Stapleton missed Borris-Ileigh's drawn game with Roscrea on Saturday after both players were sidelined with injuries in mid-week at inter-county training.

Following the game, the club's account posted the following tweet, which was deleted, aimed at Tipperary boss Michael Ryan: "Borris have now qualified for the last 16, no thanks to Michael Ryan and his disregard for the players and utter disrespect for clubs in Tipp."

Speaking at last night's launch of the Munster senior hurling championship in Cashel, Maher outlined that the tweet was nothing to do with him.

"The tweet obviously had nothing to do with me and it wasn't my view, I think it was just a personal opinion, a heat of the moment thing," Maher is quoted as saying in the Irish Daily Mirror.

"I rang the person responsible. He was venting his frustration but it should have been done from his own personal account rather than Borris-Ileigh. It didn't reflect the view of Borris-Ileigh GAA.

"He rang me to apologise but it doesn't really bother me. It's not my view, it's just something that happened. It was up, he took it down but it was too late really then, wasn't it?"
