After watching his side book their place in the quarter-final stages of the Leinster SHC, Westmeath manager Michael Ryan was determined to deflect all the praise on to his players.

The Lake County came away from Austin Stack Park with a 1-18 to 1-13 win yesterday and speaking to Midlands Sports, Waterford native Ryan said it's the players who deserve all the credit.

"At the end of the day managers make decisions, they don't score points or goals, they don't miss frees, they don't score frees," he pointed out.

"At the end of the day you're depending on the players out on the pitch and the response of our players has been excellent.

"I'm delighted for them because not alone are they good hurlers who work hard but they are absolutely really proud to play for Westmeath."
