Michael Lyster has described Joe Brolly as a "loose cannon".

The Sunday Game anchor has often had to step in when Brolly has made controversial remarks or clashed with fellow pundit Pat Spillane while on air, most famously when the outspoken Derry man referred to commentator Marty Morrissey as being "ugly" during last summer's coverage of the Ulster SFC game between Cavan and Monaghan.

"He is (a loose cannon), yes. Is he a loose cannon worth having? Yes he is," Lyster tells Eamonn Mallie in a wide-ranging interview to be broadcast on Irish TV this Monday night.

"Because if he was a guy that was just a mouth, that was just saying things for attention and stuff like that, that wouldn't work. But you can strip back his comments and the way he puts them and some of the things that he says that definitely get under people's skin and say okay, but what about the point he is making and usually you will find the point has been pretty accurate."

The popular presenter added: "What he said on that occasion about Marty was just so out of line, was just so wrong. To this day, I don't know what Joe was thinking, I really don't."
