Tyrone need to be more clinical - Mulligan

Owen Mulligan feels that Tyrone must be more clinical in attack if they are to improve on their fortunes from last season.

The Red Hands scored a 0-10 to 0-8 win at home to Cavan in their Division Two opener last Sunday and while Mulligan admits that the management will be happy with the outcome, the three-time All-Ireland winner also knows that tougher tests lay ahead for the Red Hands.

"We need to be more clinical up front, even though Mickey Harte won't care as long as long as the result is the right one," Mulligan told the Strabane Chronicle.

"I think that we'll still win the league and give Ulster a good rattle. But there's a number of players that I'd like to see doing a bit better.

"More is needed from Ronan O'Neill, Conor Meyler got a lot of ball last Sunday, but wasn't penetrating enough and Mattie Donnelly is at midfield and needs to be getting forward to score.

"The lack of clinical finishing was one of the things that cost us against Kerry last year. If we'd been stronger up front in that game, then we'd have progressed to the All-Ireland final.

"If you're a forward then you're job is to score. I know Mickey Harte used to tell us that defence started from number 15, but 10 points that Tyrone got last Sunday might not win all that many games."

Harte's men face fellow promotion hopefuls Galway this afternoon at Pearse Stadium in Salthill, where throw-in is at 2pm.
