Two GAA clubs in Roscommon have thrown their weight behind a move to stop a proposal to move part of the county into Westmeath.

Under the proposal, it has been suggested that 35 square kilometres of South Roscommon come under the jurisdiction of Westmeath.

However, great rivals St Brigid's and Clann na nGael have launched a united front to protest against such a move, which would have an impact on both their clubs.

Clann na nGael chairman Declan Rock told the Roscommon Herald: "We've applied for Sports Capital Grants on the strength of what we have done in terms of promoting Gaelic games in the area.

"We organised the Gaelic on the Greens initiative around the various housing estates in Monksland and Bealnamulla."

St Brigid's chairman Mike McDonnell added: "The rivalry between Brigid's and Clann has been put aside. This has to be stopped. The attempt to move the county boundary has been done under the radar. While last week's meeting was very helpful, we need everyone in the Roscommon GAA community to row in behind us."
