HS hurling team of the week

January 11, 2016

Fionn Kelly from Broadford, Kildare practices before the Galway versus DCU Walsh Cup game in Ballinasloe.

There were wins for NUIG, Galway, Dublin, Laois, IT Carlow and Wexford in the Walsh Cup while Cork got the better of neighbours Kerry in the Munster SHL. Here's our hurling team of the week...

1. Shane McGann (Meath)

The Royal netminder pulled off three top drawer saves before Wexford broke his brave resistance in the 48th minute of the Walsh Cup tie at Pairc Tailteann.

2. Shane Durkin (Dublin)

Durkin and his defensive colleagues got on top of the Antrim forwards in the second-half of the Walsh Cup encounter at the DCU grounds.

3. Michael Ryan (IT Carlow)

IT Carlow came out on top in the Walsh Cup local derby in Netwatch Cullen Park and the college side's full-back enjoyed a fine outing.

4. Cian Buckley (Cork)

Following their win over Kerry, Cork selector Pat Ryan name-checked Buckley as a player who could make a difference in the coming year.

5. Andrew Shore (Wexford)

Shore was a stand-out figure as the Model County came away from Navan with a facile 14-point victory over Meath under their belts.

6. Greg Lally (Galway)

The number six impressed as Micheal Donoghue got his rein as Galway senior hurling manager off to a winning start at DCU's expense.

7. Brian Moylan (Cork)

The Rebel County bounced back from last weekend's defeat to Clare to record a five point Munster SHL success over Kerry.

8. Conor Lehane (Cork)

Lehane marked his return to the red and white jersey with six points against the Kingdom at Mallow.

9. Ben Quinn (Dublin)

The midfielder produced a workmanlike performance in the Dublin engine room and was involved in the build-up to Paul Ryan's 4th minute goal.

10. Niall McMorrow (Dublin)

The half-forward contributed four points as Ger Cunningham's men saw off the Antrim challenge in a high scoring contest.

11. Stephen Maher (IT Carlow)

Laois player Maher helped himself to seven points (three from play) in IT Carlow's seven point success over Carlow.

12. Bobby Duggan (NUIG)

Westmeath failed to cope with the scoring exploits of the Clare star who finished with 1-12, including seven frees and a 65, to his name.

13. PJ Scully (Laois)

Scully's return of nine points was a key ingredient in the O'Moore County's Walsh Cup win over UCD in Heywood.

14. Joe Canning (Galway)

Canning was one of five players from last year's All-Ireland final on duty for the Tribesmen and the prolific target-man notched 1-5 against DCU.

15. Paul Ryan (Dublin)

The Antrim defenders will be glad to see the back of Ryan after he scored 1-10 (0-7 from frees) against them yesterday.
