A London hurling club have proposed that a British Army GAA team be axed from the junior championship in the English capital.

Last September saw the Irish Guards officially confirmed as part of London GAA after much debate, becoming the first army regiment club in GAA history, and they were intent on competing at junior level for 2016.

However, The Irish Post newspaper has since revealed that the Granuaile club have started a motion to reverse the decision and it is felt that new chairman London John Lacey, a member of Granuaile, could play a significant role.

Mr Lacey's predecessor, Noel O'Sullivan, is believed to have been instrumental in the Guards inclusion, casting the deciding vote in their favour after a tied ballot.

An email sent to clubs from London County Board secretary Mark Gottsche read:

"A Chara, in accordance with Rule 4.3 Voting T.O. 2015 (p58) I have been requested by Granuaile Hurling Club to notify all members of the London County Committee of their intention to propose the rescindment of the decision to approve the affiliation of the Irish Guards as a club to London County Committee. Could all clubs please ensure that their club delegates are briefed and mandated on this proposal."

Back in 2001, the old Rule 21 in the GAA, which banned members of the British security forces from playing Gaelic games was abolished.
