O'Byrne Cup not a priority, says UCD boss

UCD manager John Divilly says he wouldn't lose any sleep if the Leinster Council were to pull college teams from the O'Byrne Cup.

Having defeated Meath in their second round game on Wednesday night, the Dublin students could put one foot in the competition's semi-finals with victory over Carlow this Sunday but admits that the Sigerson Cup still very much remains their priority.

"I wouldn't fight it if we were told we couldn't play in it anymore," Divilly told the Irish Examiner.

"If we weren't, we'd still arrange a few challenge games for ourselves. It's not on our priority list to win the O'Byrne Cup. We want to be competitive in it but we also want to ensure everyone in our squad gets a game or a game and a half.

"I saw both sides of it when I was in charge of Maynooth. It was great when we weren't in it because exams take place there in January.

"It kind of prevented injuries too and 90% of the time you had more of a clean bill of health for the Sigerson. There is more of a risk with injuries in the O'Byrne Cup."

Divilly will welcome 2015 Footballer of the Year Jack McCaffrey, who captains the side, Monaghan's Ryan Wylie and Kildare forward Niall Kelly in two weeks' time when they return from a month away travelling.
