Corofin star Ciaran McGrath reckons that Galway need to put more faith in their younger players if they are to start competing for silverware again.

McGrath says that that the Tribesmen are no longer a 'Top Eight' county on the football landscape and with the recent departures of Johnny Duane and club mate Michael Lundy to the US, along with a third cruciate injury to forward Peadar Og O Griofa, he feels that now is the time to give youth a chance.

"We really need to have a look at where we are going long term," McGrath told The Irish Sun newspaper.

"I don't know what strategies are in place but there don't seem to be too many players developed from minor to Under 21 to senior.  It seems to be if you are playing well you are brought it. Long term, the top table need to look at developing players from minor onwards.

"Kevin (Walsh) needs to bring in young players, decide on a style of football and work with a group and be given time to do that. There has to be continuity. That has to start at underage because we are not in the top eight.

"Given all the underage titles and talent we have, we have to start putting the proper plans in place.

"That had to start at county board level, but hopefully Kevin can improve things if he is left for a few years."
