Ulster Council has defended itself for playing extra time in Sunday's Ulster Club SHC final.

Slaughtneil manager Michael McShane was unhappy about being "shoved into a period of extra time" at the Athletic Grounds as his side lost narrowly to Cushendall and asked "had it been a football final, would it have gone to extra time?".

However, Ulster Council spokesman John Connolly insists that - in keeping with provisions passed at a Special Congress - both clubs had been informed that extra time would be played in the event of a draw.

"It was in the fixtures and both clubs were notified about it and that's the rule," he told The Irish Independent. "It's there in black and white, Rule 3.5 in Part II of the Official Guide and we went by the Official Guide.

"That's the way it is now in all provincial club games if necessary. Whether it's football or hurling makes no difference, that's the way we do things. We don't make a distinction between the two."
