Stack got "burned" over Clare job

Sean Stack admits he's still sore over the circumstances that saw him miss out on the Clare hurling manager's job at the turn of the millennium.

Stack, who will manage Clonlara against his native Sixmilebridge in Sunday's Canon Hamilton Cup decider, was added to Ger Loughnane's management team in 1999 with a view to taking over from his former county team-mate the following year. But the appointment never materialised with Cyril Lyons eventually succeeding Loughnane in the role.

"It's a bit of a sticky issue with me," he said in the Clare Champion.

"I was burned back along the line. In '99, I was with a team, was told to wait my time and keep my mouth shut and I did, but I paid the price for doing that. It is a big issue with me. I got sold down wrongly by a few individuals."
