Tipperary dual star Eddie Connolly has lost his brave battle with cancer.

The Loughmore-Castleiney clubman was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013 at the age of just 27 and had been receiving extensive medical treatment ever since. He had recently travelled to Spain for a new form of cancer treatment. Tonight's fundraiser at Thurles Greyhound Stadium for the Eddie Connolly Trust Fund still goes ahead.

Eddie represented Tipp in all grades of hurling and football. His proudest moment was captaining the Premier County to an All-Ireland IHC title in 2012. Despite his illness, he appeared as a substitute for Loughmore-Castleiney in last year's Tipperary SHC semi-final.

A statement from the Tipperary county board read: "The death has taken place of former Loughmore-Castleiney and Tipperary player Eddie Connolly after a long battle with cancer.

"Eddie passed away peacefully last night at home with his family.

"At the request of the Connolly family, tonight's Eddie Connolly Trust Fund "Night at the Dogs" at Thurles Greyhound Stadium will still go ahead in a celebration of Eddie's life.

"On behalf of the Tipperary County Board, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Connolly family at this sad time."
