Jason Ryan's future as Kildare senior football manager is up in the air following today's "embarrassing" quarter-final defeat at the hands of All-Ireland champions Kerry.

Speaking to Newstalk, the Waterford native, who took over from Kieran McGeeney in October, 2013, reflected on the 27-point hammering but the subject of whether or not he hopes to stay on for a third year at the helm was never raised.

"We're devastated, our season's over, number one," he commented.

"Regardless of how you lose a game, it's a season ending game. When you reflect on the score, it's embarrassing stuff so it's very hard to take.

"It's gone now. As a group of players, they are hurting from what happened against Dublin and what happened today.

"You would hope that they would focus on the positives of the Cork performance and try to use that as a reality check that Kildare can perform.

"But, we have to force things to happen and today we were second best in so many areas on the field. It was a very difficult one to take."

Inconsistency has been at the root of a lot of the Lilywhites problems this year according to the former Wexford boss.

"It has been our problem all season.

"Going from Offaly to Longford to the Cork game, getting three wins was huge because we hadn't been able to get the consistency and get the wins back-to-back.

"We felt that we were getting that level of consistency and performance but it just didn't happen for us there today."
