The young woman who tragically lost her life in a drowning accident in Baltimore on Tuesday was a member of a well-respected Cork GAA family.

Twenty-year-old Niamh O'Connor from Blossom Grove, 3km east of Glanmire, was the great-granddaughter of Bertie Murphy, president of Sarsfields Hurling Club until his death in 1999.

Her grand-uncles, Bertie Og and Tadhg Og Murphy - current chairman of the club - are both former Cork hurlers and have been the backbone of Sarsfields for many years.

"We are all in complete shock. Niamh's family have a long association with the club. All our thoughts and prayers are with the O'Connor family and Niamh's many friends," club secretary Jimmy Murphy told The Irish Examiner.

Barry Ryan Snr. also lost his life in the tragedy, while the search continues for the body of his son, Barry Davis Ryan, who was Niamh's boyfriend.
