A newly elected Northern Ireland MP has turned down an invitation to attend Fermanagh's opening Ulster SFC match.

Tom Elliott was invited to attend Fermanagh's clash against Antrim next month by Michelle Gildernew's election agent Sean Lynch.

However, the newly appointed MP stressed to the Fermanagh Herald that he would not be attending any GAA match because of his beliefs.

"The reality is people know this, that I don't accept they should be flying the Irish tricolour and playing the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland in Northern Ireland. People know that and I have always said that."

A Sinn Fein spokesperson quipped: "Maybe he will have a road to Damascus conversion. Maybe he will go to the match. I think that would be a good gesture, it's a big sporting occasion and he would be welcome. I would have no doubt the GAA fraternity would welcome him."
