Monaghan GAA has been left reeling by reports that a footballer in the county has failed a drugs test.

The player, who has been involved with the Monaghan senior footballers in the past, is believed to have tested positive for a steroid during a recent test, according to the Sunday Independent. He is currently under investigation by the Irish Sports Council's Anti-Doping unit.

The newspaper also reports that the player is receiving advice and counselling from the GPA.

The shock news comes after it was announced on Wednesday that GAA players will be subjected to blood testing for the first time next year.

The GPA has promised to fully comply with the new regulations which were announced at the Anti-Doping annual review. An education programme for GAA members will begin this year before blood testing comes into effect as the Irish Sports Council steps up its campaign to implement more stringent tests for banned substances.

Meanwhile, Malachy O'Rourke's Monaghan team continued their preparations for their Ulster SFC quarter-final against Cavan by drawing 1-21 to 2-18 with Galway in a behind-closed-doors SF challenge in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath yesterday.
