Westmeath have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of their Leinster SFC opener against Louth on May 17.
Towering midfielder David Duffy, whose only appearance of the Lake County's ill-fated Allianz League campaign came as a second half substitute against Cavan, has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee problem. The Shandonagh clubman has been struggling with the injury all year and has now been told he needs surgery to repair the damage.
Long-serving forward Denis Glennon is also a big doubt for the trip to Drogheda after fracturing his hand in training last weekend. Despite his hand being in a cast at the moment, the Tyrrellspass man has been able to continue training with his team-mates. However, the odds are against him being ready for the trip to Drogheda.
Meanwhile, first-choice full back Kieran Gavin is resigned to missing the start of the championship as he continues his recovery from the Achilles tendon injury he suffered last August.
