Sheedy: take Dubs out of Croker

Sending Dublin out on the road for Leinster SFC games would 'generate a great buzz' throughout the province according to former star Jack Sheedy.

The current Longford manager called on the province's fixture-makers to consider taking Jim Gavin's formidable outfit out of the Jones Road venue to give other teams a fair crack of the whip.

"It would boost other teams at a time when they are struggling to match Dublin and would also generate a great buzz at provincial venues," he opined to The Irish Independent.

"A packed ground always creates an atmosphere."

There are also benefits to be gained from a Dublin point of view he added.

"I was on teams that played at various venues around Leinster and the lads always enjoyed it immensely.

"It was great to pull into Tullamore, Portlaoise, Wexford or wherever and see the Dublin supporters crowding along the streets.

"Many of them would have travelled down the night before and made an occasion of it. I'm sure the present Dublin team would enjoy the same experience as we had. It would also be good for country towns, bringing new business in."

Longford face a potential trip to headquarters to take on Sheedy's native county if they were to overcome Offaly in their provincial opener in Tullamore on May 16th.

This weekend, however, they will face the Faithful County with Division 4 silverware up for grabs.

"Meeting three times in such a short space of time is not ideal for either of us but that's the way the cards have fallen.

"And when you're in a final in Croke Park, you want to win, irrespective of what's ahead. It helps maintain momentum for the Championship so you'll get a genuine contest on Saturday.

"We both got out of Division 4, which wasn't easy, so now we want to put on a really good performance before the championship, which is only just around the corner."
