Westmeath manager Michael Ryan admits that his side face an uphill battle to stay in the promotion hunt in Division 2A.

A surprise defeat to Derry, their second consecutive defeat to the Ulster side in the league, has put a serious dent in Westmeath's promotion hopes.

And Ryan admitted to the Westmeath Examiner that they could not afford any more slip ups as they prepare to face Kerry on Sunday week.

"We are now in a knockout league effectively," said Ryan. Our next game is down in Kerry and that's very, very sticky. The situation is of our own making.

"But, in fairness to our players, they battled away and showed a good attitude and our work rate was good. However, at the end of the day, when you are in the driving seat you must drive home."
