Hip, hip, hooray

Pearce Hanley is glad to be undergoing career-saving hip surgery.

Although the procedure will cost the Mayo man up to half of the 2015 AFL season, he accepts that without it his playing days could be over:

"From what the specialist said, it nearly could have been career-ending," the Brisbane Lions ace is quoted in The Irish Daily Mirror. "A lot of what was wrong with my hips did not show up in scans, so if I did keep training and played the start of the season, I would have done more damage.

"While it is very disappointing to not be playing in the first half of the year, for the longevity of my career, it was a good move to get in and get it looked at.

"It's been years in the making apparently, so we were lucky to get to it and fix it up now."
