Injured Westmeath duo face anxious wait

Westmeath are keeping their fingers crossed that the knee injuries sustained by James Dolan and John Connellan against Galway aren't serious.

Both players will undergo scans this week to ascertain the extent of the injuries. Connellan had been only on the field a matter of minutes when he was forced to retire in the 67th minute, while Dolan also failed to finish the game after picking up a similar injury.

The injuries only added to Westmeath's misery after they had two second half penalty appeals turned down by referee Cormac Reilly, and had seen John Heslin's late 40-metre free - which would have earned them a share of the spoils - come back off the inside of the post.

"That was the difference in the game, we hit the post. These things happen," manager Tom Cribbin reflected.

"That ball just didn't go over for us and they got on it in the square. It could have dropped to one of our lads and next thing it is in the net and you are two points up. You need a little bit of luck in these things too."
