Our football team of the week

After the sparring of the subsidiary competitions, the gaelic football season started in earnest over the weekend. Check out our football team of the week ...

1. Joe Hayes (Clare)

The Banner County netminder pulled off two excellent saves to keep a clean sheet against Wexford in Hennessy Park.

2. Stephen Coen (Mayo)

Coen and his full-back line colleagues, Kevin Keane and Keith Higgins, were successful in nullifying the threat of the Kerry inside forward line.

3. Kevin Maguire (Westmeath)

The Lake County's full-back curbed the influence of Laois' Donie Kingston and helped lay the foundations for his side's first league win since March 2013.

4. Neil Collins (Roscommon)

The Rossies had to settle for a share of the spoils against Cavan in Kiltoom and Collins was his usual reliable self in the home side's defence.

5. Paul Varley (Galway)

The number five's frequent raids forward caused plenty of headaches for Meath and he sent over two points.

6. Dessie Mone (Monaghan)

Monaghan came in under the radar to cause something of an upset against Tyrone and Mone was, as per usual, a prominent figure for Malachy O'Rourke's side.

7. Conor Dorman (Cork)

A late inclusion in the Cork team at the expense of Tomas Clancy, Dorman was on target with two points for Brian Cuthbert's charges.

8. Darren Hughes (Monaghan)

Tyrone couldn't cope with Hughes' industry and he was head and shoulders the best midfielder on view in Omagh.

9. Gearoid McKiernan (Cavan)

Returned from suspension to prove his worth to the Breffni cause by kicking four second-half points and inspiring their comeback in the draw with Roscommon.

10. Mark Collins (Cork)

Another player who caught the eye as the Rebel County preserved their proud unbeaten record at home against Dublin in the league.

11. Michael Murphy (Donegal)

Life under Rory Gallagher got off to a winning start for the defeated All-Ireland finalists and Murphy, despite missing a penalty, exerted a big influence on proceedings.

12. Paul McCusker (Fermanagh)

Pete McGrath's side continued their promising start to the year with a nine-point victory over Louth in Division 3 and McCusker worked tirelessly across the half-forward line.

13. Donal O'Hare (Down)

The diminutive Mourne County corner-forward palmed home the winning goal to bring his personal tally to 1-6 as Jim McCorry's side pulled the rug from under Kildare's feet.

14. Jamie Clarke (Armagh)

Armagh survived a stern test against Tipperary on home soil and Clarke, who helped himself to 1-5, was their go-to-man.

15. Michael Conroy (Mayo)

Came off the bench as a replacement for the unlucky Evan Regan in the 12th minute and proceeded to produce a 'man-of-the-match' display, raising four white flags, against the All-Ireland champions.
