Colm Cavanagh says it is important for Tyrone to maintain their Division One status.

The season begins in earnest this weekend when the Red Hands entertain neighbours Monaghan in the first round of the national football league.

"A big focus is always to maintain Division One status, because you're playing against the likes of Kerry, Cork and Dublin," the Moy man says in The Irish News.

"That's where you want to be, you want to be competing against those teams every year.

"It's definitely going to be a tough run for us and we're going to have our work cut out but we're just going to keep our heads down, keep working away, and see where it gets us.

"You want to win every game you go out and play, that's the long and short of it. Mickey has used the panel and used a lot of players [during the McKenna Cup] and that's what it's all about.

"We have found ourselves in the last number of years having a long McKenna Cup and that's been no different this year. It works well and I think every team nowadays is taking it seriously and trying to win their games.

"It's a good platform going forward into the season."
