Drones offering a whole new vantage point

Drone offer a whole new vantage point.

The man behind St Mary's University's trailblazing drone has emphasised the importance of getting an aerial view.

Gerd Curley pioneered the use of a drone to gather information from all of St Mary's Ryan Cup matches this year and he believes the data gathered from this latest technological advancement could be of great benefit to GAA backroom teams:

"It can be beneficial for all sports but for gaelic games in particular because you can see different patterns of play around the pitch that you don't get from ground level," he told The Irish Independent.

"It's a totally different ball game. You wouldn't believe the movement you can see on and off the ball that you can see from this angle, movement that is viewed differently from ground level.

"It's phenomenal. It's a great vantage point. I can really see it being used for county training games."

Curley adds that safety is not an issue as the eye in the sky cannot fall down onto the pitch: "This particular drone I have is failsafe. It is locked to satellites and if it loses battery power it goes home to where I took it off from. There aren't any instances of this thing coming out of the sky and causing injury. It hasn't happened with this model."
