Westmeath "no further on" with manager search

Westmeath chairman Sean Sheridan admits there has been no progress made in the county's increasingly desperate search for a senior football manager.

Donegal are the only other football county still without a manager ahead of the 2015 season, but Westmeath have had much more time to find a replacement for Paul Bealin, who was ousted after just one season in August. Twice, the county board put forward names for ratification - first Bealin and then Peter Leahy - only for them to be rejected by club delegates.

While former county star and selector Jack Cooney remains interested in filling the post, it is believed that the selection committee have problems with his proposed package and are looking elsewhere. With Garrycastle's Flanagan Cup winning manager Dessie Dolan Snr ruling himself out, former St. Brigid's boss Noel O'Brien is the only other candidate left in the race.

"We are no further on, we still don't have a name for clubs and the door is open to everyone," Sheridan confirmed to the Westmeath Topic.

"At this stage, I don't know where we're going with it, but if there is a recommendation for clubs, there will be a county board meeting next week. Otherwise, we will hold off until we have a name to put forward."

Westmeath are one of the counties eligible to resume collective training in two weeks' time, so the pressure is on to have a manager in place before then.
