Castlepollard and Westmeath star Darren McCormack

Castlepollard and Raharney will do battle for the Examiner Cup on October 19 after upsetting the odds in yesterday's Westmeath SHC semi-finals at Cusack Park.

In the first game, 'Pollard caused a huge shock when they edged out champions Castletown-Geoghegan on a 2-11 to 0-16 scoreline. Alan Devine's early goal helped Jody Murray's charges to a 1-5 to 0-5 interval lead and after Castletown had battled back to take the lead, John McCarthy added a second major with five minutes remaining to give the north Westmeath outfit the win.

Free-taker Niall O'Brien hit 0-10 for the black and ambers, who shot three late wides.

Leinster League winners Clonkill also made their exit following a 2-8 to 1-15 defeat to a fired-up Raharney. With young Killian Doyle in fine scoring form, the Deelsiders led by 1-8 to 0-5 at the break.

A Luke Folan goal left the minimum between the sides early in the second half, but Johnny Greville's men were able to pull clear in the closing stages and will go into the final as favourites.
