It will be another five weeks before Galway will find out if their application to join the Leinster U21 and minor hurling championships is successful.

The Westerners made a formal application at Wednesday night's Leinster Council meeting to move their flagship underage teams into Leinster where their senior hurlers have competed since 2009. Galway have already been admitted to next year's Leinster IHC and have been drawn against Kilkenny in the semi-final.

Galway were hopeful that a vote on their U21 and minor application would be taken on the night, but it was decided to delay the decision until the next Leinster Council meeting on November 5 to allow counties more time to discuss the issue.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, Leinster Council chairman John Horan said he expects some resistance to Galway's inclusion in the province's minor and U21 championships.

"Underage is slightly different to adults," he noted.

"Underage people are a little bit more protective of their underage teams in the context that Galway are considered to be quite strong. They've won seven minor All-Irelands in the last 20 years and other than Kilkenny, nobody else in Leinster would have gone near that.

"That's the first time they've shown an official appetite."
