Interviews for the vacant Westmeath football manager's post are taking place this week, and among the candidates is former county star Jack Cooney.
The Coralstown/Kinnegad clubman, who previously served as a selector under Luke Dempsey and Paidi O Se, has guided Celbridge to the semi-finals of the Kildare SFC where, ironically, they will meet the Luke Dempsey-managed holders Moorefield on Saturday.

Dempsey is also believed to be keen on a return to the Westmeath set-up next year, but as U21 manager.

"I am a candidate and am interested in the position," Cooney told the Westmeath Topic.

"I was with my own club for the best part of four years and decided at the end of last year to move on to another challenge. The opportunity came in Celbridge and it's working out well. We won the league title and are preparing for a championship semi-final on Saturday."

The other nominees for the position are ex-Monaghan and Meath manager Seamus McEnaney, former Waterford manager Niall Carew, former Galway star and manager Val Daly, Mullingar Shamrocks stalwart and current Na Fianna (Meath) supremo Ned Moore, St. Malachy's manager Peter Leahy, former Maryland and Athlone boss Finbarr Egan and Ray Smyth, who managed both the The Downs and Mullingar Shamrocks to Westmeath SFC titles in the past decade.
